Population Center Grants: Overview

There are several ways that the Berkeley Population Center supports its affiliates and their research:

  • Pilot Grants. Two times a year affiliates and other faculty with PI status may apply for a pilot grant for seed or 'risky' research projects. These grants allot for up to $20,000, and are funded in collaboration with the Center on the Economics and Demography of Aging (CEDA), the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Program, and the Center for Health Research (CHR). For more information, please download the Call for Proposals and the Guidelines for Proposals.
  • Grant Administration (see our Services page)
  • Announcements of grant opportunities...emailed to a targeted set of affiliates per their research interests, and documented on the website.
  • Review of draft grant proposals, and review of articles to be submitted for peer-review publication. Contact Leora Lawton (llawton at berkeley.edu for more information).
  • The role of SPO: PI's submit their grant applications via their Organized Research Unit (ORU) and IBER is an ORU. We help you prepare the application, making sure all the forms are completed correctly, formalize the budget, and review the research plan for you. It is then sent to SPO, who makes sure it conforms to the requirements for our institution. PI's don't actually submit grants, only SPO can do that as our Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR).

Let BPC and IBER know as soon as possible that you plan on sumitting a grant. SPO needs to receive the entire completed application 5 full business days before the official deadline. IBER needs it 5 days before that in order to ensure a timely, organized, stress-free process.
