Population Center Research Approaches: Population Theory
About Population Theory
Population research at Berkeley has long been characterized by its profound commitment to theory in both qualitative and quantitative research: that is, both formal/mathematical theory and social theory. The BPC affiliate roster reflects both traditions. Our core interests lie in population as a system that interacts in specific, irreducible ways with other (economic, cultural, geographical, etc.) systems. This view of the demographic enterprise requires orienting our research to questions regarding the fundamental nature of population, and thus, to population theory.
BPC affiliates’ path-breaking theoretical work spans:
- Mathematical and Statistical Theory
- Evolutionary Theory
- Social and Economic Theory
